An able seafarer was known and respected by the quality of his splicing, rigging and fancy work. At a time of international security crisis, shipping today is as essential as it is dangerous. Knots are functional as well as aesthetic and reflect seafaring life. They must hold fast, not jam up, they must be able to be let go in a hurry and must, above all, be reliable. It follows that it is no accident that they are beautiful in their symmetry and design as well.
In Jim's day a seafarer's trade came mainly through word of mouth and on the job training. Thanks to the Maritime Union and previously the Seamen's Union of Australia ensuring the skills and competencies for ratings are properly structured and funded, our long respected commitment to our profession is being retained. James Harvey has made an important contribution to the ongoing recognition and maintenance of these skills. The union and its many members have been honoured to assist in our life member finalising this project.'
